FAQ's

What is rooibos?
Rooibos (aspalathus linearis) is a rare shrub with green, spiny leaves. It only grows in the Cederberg Mountain region of South Africa.

Is red tea the same as green, white, oolong and black?
No. Red tea comes from the rooibos plant, whereas green, white, oolong and black teas come from a plant called camellia sineses.

How long do you steep ZT?
Rooibos red tea releases more antioxidants if the tea is steeped for at least ten minutes. We fresh-brew ZT, then steep it for not less than 30 minutes to get the maximum antioxidant level content.

What are free radicals?
Free radicals are unstable molecules that have lost an electron. They're formed as a by-product of natural processes, or by exposure to the environment.  Free radicals can damage DNA-they also may contribute to increased health risks from cancer, clogged blood vessels, heart attacks, and stroke.

What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are a class of organic molecules that bind to and deactivate free radicals, making them harmless.

Does rooibos red tea contain antioxidants?
Yes, it does. Rooibos is rich in antioxidants, and even contains some antioxidants not found in green tea.

Does rooibos red tea contain caffeine?
No. Rooibos red tea is naturally-and absolutely-free of caffeine.

How long has rooibos been used to make tea?
Native South Africans have used rooibos for thousands of years, but it was brought to the western world only three centuries ago, by a botanist named Carl Humberg who was introduced to rooibos by the Khoi tribe of South Africa. It became commercially available in 1904, when Benjamin Ginsberg, a Russian immigrant whose family was in the tea business, realized its potential.

Does rooibos red tea taste like green tea?
No. Red tea has a smooth, full, and complex flavor that is neither bitter nor astringent.

Does ZT contain sugar?
No. Our tea is sweetened with organic clarified brown rice syrup and natural monk fruit concentrate.

What is monk fruit concentrate?
Monk fruit (luo han guo), grown exclusively in the southern mountains of China, is a natural, zero-calorie sweetener. The monk fruit concentrate used in ZT is certified GRAS as a food ingredient, meaning it has been recognized as safe by the USDA.

What is clarified brown rice syrup?
Clarified brown rice syrup is an extremely versatile sweetener derived from culturing rice. It's a predominantly slow-digesting carbohydrate that enters the bloodstream steadily over a two-to-three hour period, which means it potentially has less of an impact on insulin release, and consequently, may store less of the excess carbohydrate as fat. The clarified brown rice syrup used in ZT comes from organically grown brown rice.

Where do you get the fiber that's in ZT?
The fiber we use in ZT is a carbohydrate that is found in many plants and vegetables, called "inulin." Inulin is considered a prebiotic, because it's not susceptible to digestion, and therefore doesn't add any calories to the tea.

How many calories are in ZT?
Unsweetened and Ginseng & Honey ZT contain only 5 calories per 16-ounce bottle; Lemon and Vanilla ZT have 10 calories each.

What is a Glycemic Index?
The glycemic index (GI) rates how much blood sugar increases over a two-to-three hour period after the ingestion of particular food. The lower the GI, the more satisfying and sustaining the food, for the longer period of time.  With a GI of 20, ZT is considered a low GI beverage, naturally low in calories.

What does the Z in ZT stand for?
"Zero"-as in zero caffeine and zero sugar.
